George Benjamin Sonnek
George Benjamin Sonnek, age 91, of Wells, MN died Wednesday, September 14, 2022 at the Mapleton Community Home holding his daughter’s hand. Visitation will be held 2:00-4:00 PM on Sunday, Sept.18, 2022 at Nasinec Funeral Home (789 Business Park Drive, Wells, MN). A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday Sept. 19, 2022 at 10:30 AM at St. Casimir Catholic Church in Wells with Fr. Peter Klein officiating. Burial will be in St. Casimir Catholic Cemetery in Wells, MN. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to St. Casimir Parochial School in Wells. Nasinec Funeral Home in Wells is entrusted with arrangements. Please see www.nasinecfh.com to leave online condolences.
George was born February 22, 1931 the son of Joseph J. and Agnes E. (Cegla) Sonnek. He attended country school and Catholic school until the 8th grade. George was a hard worker, farming, working summers at Del Monte and Custom Farm Services to purchase the farm from his parents. He farmed alongside his brother Joey and his nephews, crop farming, milking cows and raising pigs. George was united in marriage to Patricia Diamond on June 16th, 1962 in Rochester, MN. He and Pat enjoyed dancing at the Kato Ballroom in Mankato. He was a long-time member of St. Casimir Catholic Church. He enjoyed playing cards with his friends, family and the guys at the VFW. George’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the light of his life.
He is survived by his daughter Diane Mathews, granddaughter Amanda Sonnek, and grandson Joseph Mathews (Sunshine Giese); great-grandchildren: Michael and Madalynn; Isaac and Azalia; Xilas; sister-in-law, Vicky Sonnek of Wells; along with many nieces, nephews and their families.
George was preceded in death by his wife Pat, daughter Pamela Jean, sons Baby David and Brian, his siblings: Donald Sonnek, Ralph (Myrtle) Sonnek, Jerome (Marian) Sonnek, Olive (Leo) Hefner, Marion (Larry) Thompson, Joseph (Bernice) Sonnek, Alice (Wayne) Feuerhelm, and Elaine (Ralph) Huxford.
