Carole Lorraine Schreiber was born December 16th, 1935 in Austin, MN to Evan and Marianne (Murray) Orcutt. She was named after Christmas Carols and grew up on a farm just outside of the tidy small town of Lyle, MN. There was no electricity, no indoor plumbing and no Wi-Fi. She did walk the mile stretch to a one room school house called Minnereka, but usually there was someone to give her and her two sisters a ride. Her favorite childhood pets were her horses: Dolly and Nelly; and Skippy their dog. There was a farmhand who received friendly miscellaneous pranks from Carole and her sisters. In high school she was the drum majorette for the Lyle Lions marching band and a cheerleader for the football and basketball teams, and participated in 4-H.
Carole graduated from Lyle High School in 1953. Post-graduation she modeled for JCPenney and moved to Minneapolis to pursue a modeling career. She met a shoe salesman and they started dating, however his shoes did not fit.
In the summer of 1955, Carole met her future husband at the Wells Swimming Pool. She thought he was a senior in college only to find out he was a senior in high school and he found out she could not swim. They later married in Macon, Missouri and moved to Fort Walton Beach Florida near the Eglin Air Force Base and transferred to Washington D.C.
After being a retired military wife, they moved back to Minnesota where she worked at the St. Peter Hospital and helped manage the Shoreland Golf and Country Club while raising two boys. Carole became a noon-hour aid and classroom assistant at Jefferson Elementary in Faribault and was a strong advocate for a special needs student and fought to keep Missy in the mainstream educational system when others felt it more convenient to put them in a mentally challenged facility. BTW- Missy graduated from college.
In 1974, Carole coached the 6th grade softball team and they won the city championship. She bowled on a league and they also won city tournaments. She worked at Control Data as a clerk and KDHL Radio Station in sales.
At age 45, she went back to school and earned her LPN license and worked at Pleasant Manor Nursing Home for over 18 years. She’s a professional homemaker who never complained and always attended her kids swim meets, dance recitals, concerts and plays. She made her three kids proud.
Carole loved to laugh and she loved to be around people. She was always game to go anywhere but due to Parkinson’s, it prevented her from doing the many things she enjoyed like walking and dining out but Carole did not complain. She was a huge Twins fan and attended last year’s playoff game against Houston. We lost. She loved to watch birds and sit in a boat with her husband Daryl while he baited the hook and watched her bobber go down, his stayed afloat. Her special comfort place was Up North, where she could smell the cedar and the pines and hear the chickadees, loons and owls in their harmonic days. She became a snowbird in LA and spent many winters visiting her daughter.
Most of all, Carole was our superhero, our constant Christmas Carole every day of the year.
She is survived by her son Steve (Julie) Schreiber of Carrolton, TX; daughter Dawn Schreiber of Easton, MN; dog Ollie; three grandchildren: Eden, Alexa and Madison; nieces and nephews; many cousins; many many feathery friends.
She is preceded in death by her husband Daryl Schreiber; son Durand Schreiber; parents Evan and Marianne Orcutt; sisters Dianna Haugen and Patricia Schuster; mother & father-in-law Wes and Anna Schreiber; brothers-in-law: Bud Schreiber, Dale “Bubby” Schreiber, David Schreiber, Frank Haugen, Bob McQuiggan, Kenny Neste, and Marvin Schuster; sisters-in-law: Donna McQuiggan, Dolly Neste, and Adeline Schreiber.
