Paul was born to James and Viola (Geerdes) Hove on February 22, 1943, in Buffalo Center, Iowa. He lived on the family farm in Bricelyn, Minnesota and graduated from Bricelyn High School in 1961. He was a life-long learner, earning multiple degrees, including a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering from the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities and a Master of Business Administration from the College of St. Thomas. While at the University of Minnesota, he was the President of his fraternity, Kappa Eta Kappa. Paul dated Sheryl Hovland in high school and college, and they married in 1964.
Paul grew up farming, hunting and trapping. He had a fulfilling 25-year career at Unisys (formerly Sperry UNIVAC) where he started as a Field Engineer in 1965 fixing ship-board computers and quickly rose to management, ending his tenure as Director of Naval System Engineering. This was followed by working at his own business including 10-years consulting for Guidant Corporation. Among Paul’s defining qualities were his sharp intelligence, wry sense of humor, and eager willingness to help his friends and family. His most cherished roles were as a husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
Paul enjoyed flying his RV-7A experimental airplane that he built, visiting his family lake home in McGregor, Minnesota, fishing, vacationing, shooting, and helping his family and friends with special projects. He was known for his willingness to help and his ability to fix anything. He was active in several organizations, including serving as President of Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Chapter 54 and Treasurer of the VIP club for Unisys retirees.
