Meldren was born September 7, 1921 to Alfon and Leona (Brandt) Tolzmann on the Tolzmann family farm in Faribault Co., MN.  He attended country school # 98 until the 8th grade when he ended his school career to help on the farm.  At the age of 22, Meldren was drafted into the United States Army in 1944, during WWII.  He did his Basic Training in Fort Snelling and Texas.  He was in the 24th Infantry, sweeping islands in the Pacific.  He was stationed a mere 10 miles from where the bombs were dropped in Nagasaki and Hiroshima.  Upon his return home, Meldren was united in marriage to Hazel Miller on September 18, 1947 at the Miller family farm.  The couple lived in rural Minnesota Lake, Faribault County, and later to the Miller family farm in Blue Earth County.  Meldren was very proud of his two miniature donkeys and miniature goats.  After retiring from farming, he began woodworking.  He enjoyed fishing and family get-togethers.  He could sit and talk with anyone.  He was a lifetime member of the Wells VFW and American Legion.  He especially enjoyed working at the VFW chicken feed.
