Alan (Al) was born October 4, 1957 in Forest City, IA the son of Leslie and Gladys (Engebretson) Nelson. Al and his family moved to the Freeborn area in 1968. Al graduated from Freeborn High School, the class of 1976. In high school, Al was a great athlete, participating in many sports. He was also a great sports fan, especially the Minnesota Twins! He really enjoyed taking a cruise in one of his many classic cars. Attending concerts was a lot of fun for him because he was with his friends.
On July 28, 1979, Al married Penny Johnson at the Pioneer Village Church at the Freeborn County Fairgrounds. The couple later divorced, but remained very good friends to the end of his life. Al was in customer service most of his life. He was a parts man at Bill Olson Chevrolet in Albert Lea, a salesman with High Plains Equipment of Dalhart, TX, owner and operator of the Powerhouse Bar and Grille in Freeborn, and a service writer for Wayne’s Repair in Freeborn.
Al was preceded in death by his parents and many aunts and uncles.
He is survived by two brothers, Larry (Nancy) Nelson of Freeborn, MN, Wayne (Dawn) Nelson of Eyota, MN; niece, Whitney Varnis of Freeborn, MN; nephew, Dylan (Khansaa) Nelson of Dundas, MN; grand niece, Everly Varnis of Freeborn, MN; along with many close friends.
He was a great guy friend and will be missed
My thoughts and prayers go out to Al’s whole family.
All that knew him loved him for so many reasons. I know he meant the world to me and he always had a very special piece of my heart and he will always hold that place. He could make you laugh and cry at the same time. We went to sports games, concerts and vacations and always had a fantastic time.
Thoughts and prayers to his family and friends at this time.
I can’t attend the celebration of life for my dear friend as I am battling cancer at this time. I will be there in heart and soul. I will never forget you Al may you rest in peace. I will love you forever. Until we meet again fly high like the eagles 🦅
My sympathy to the family. Allan was a Neighbor growing up when they lived on the farm. My thoughts and prayer are with you Larry and Wayne. It’s difficult to lose a sibling.
My sympathy goes to the family of AL, May God’s blessing comfort you all.
