Mom entered this world on December 23, 1933 in Mankato, MN and grew up with her four brothers in Janesville, MN. During her childhood, mom developed her fondness for dogs and as the only girl in a family of five, she was often drafted into football and other “boy’s” games which were played on the Donahue’s large lawn. Her first jobs were babysitting, detasseling corn and cleaning for a neighbor in need who referred to mom as her life-saver. Always an eager learner, she graduated as valedictorian of the Janesville High School Class of 1951.
Mom’s dream of a career in nursing became a reality when she was awarded a full scholarship for having the highest score in St. Mary’s School of Nursing’s entrance exam and graduating as a registered nurse in 1953. While in nursing school, she met a handsome bartender named Dale Rucker at The Pub, which he operated with his dad and brothers at the end of the Miracle Mile Mall. After working a few years at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, she moved to Wells. Mom and dad were married on May 5, 1956, settling in a small apartment before building their home on 7th Ave in Wells where they raised five children.
As a nurse at the Wells Municipal Hospital for 38 years, mom worked nights and took pride in the hard work and independence that was expected of the nursing staff. Mom loved being outside, taking canoe trips, sunbathing, picnicking, playing tennis, walking her dogs, and swimming. She also loved to travel taking trips to Hawaii, the Bahamas, Spain, Ireland, France, Egypt, many big cities in the states and her favorite Mexican destination of Cancun. She had a passion for antiques, loved to read and do crossword puzzles and spent countless hours crocheting afghans for family and friends.
Mom always gave of herself volunteering for The American Cancer Society as the county chairperson of Daffodil Days, Catholic Charities of Southern Minnesota Child and Family Services, St. Theresa Circle, St. Casimir Church and School, Faribault County Guardian ad Litem services.
Her five children will miss her dearly: Mike (Amy) Rucker, Lake Wilson, MN; Matt (Janet) Rucker, Comfrey, MN; Martha (Steve) Guthmiller, Hawley, MN; Meg (Dave) Brew, Appleton, WI; and Ned (Tracy) Rucker, New Hartford, IA. She was also blessed with 14 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She is further survived by her dearly beloved brothers Jim (Sharon) Donahue and John Donahue, and sisters-in-law Marlene Donahue and Delma Bateman.
Mom will be warmly welcomed in heaven by her loving husband of 45 years, Dale, who died in 2001. Alongside him will be her brother Bob Donahue and his wife, Ann Donahue, her brother Mike Donahue, her brothers- and sisters-in-law Eddy and Betty Rucker, Chuck and Bess Rucker.
We would like to extend a sincere thank you to all that cared for our mom during her years at The Shepherd’s Inn Assisted Living in Wells, MN, The Mankato Eye Clinic, United Hospital District and St. Luke’s Lutheran Care Center in Blue Earth, MN. Our mom was treated with dignity and respect with every step she took on her journey with dementia. Your kindness was so comforting and will not be forgotten.
We love you mom and hope you are enjoying warm sunny skies on the beach after an exciting tennis match and a dip in the pool.
Not only a neighbor for a number of years but also worked with my Mother at the Wells Hospital. Rest in peace Jan. Prayers for the family!

So sorry for your loss, let your memories help you through this time of sorrow.
Sending you all my deepest condolences during this time. What a beautiful tribute to her! Hugs ~
I have many fond memories of Jan from my days growing up in Wells. Most of them involve her laughter on the tennis courts and getting beat by her tricky angle volleys. I was always in awe of how fast she could move – usually with multiple wraps around her knees and other joints. My heart goes out to the Ruckers. Sending you all much love.
Our thoughts are with you. Although we did not have a chance to meet her in Cancun, Meg, you have shared some wonderful stories about your parents vacationing there.
Always full of life and I remember her dedication to bringing awareness to cancer and bringing daffodils at Shepherds Inn. I even made her a daffodil brooch to wear.
God has his arms open ready to welcome
her home. So sorry for your loss.
Give my condolences to the families, I
am not able to attend.
My sympathy to you and your family! Your mom was a great woman. God bless your family
I met Jan thru Hospice when I was a volunteer after I retired from nursing. She was a delightful and very caring person. My condolences to all who mourn her.
Very well written memorial. It gave me both tears and a smile at the same time. Enjoy your new adventure aunt Janice. Until we meet again, I will live off of the fine memories I have of my childhood, the Christmas stocking you made for me, and the close ties the Donahue family has maintained.
Nephew and cousin Todd

Jan was a welcoming presence whenever I visited the Rucker’s home. Fond memories of trips to Mankato, Walnut Lake along with many conversations whenever we visited. She was insightful and kind. May she celebrate well with those who’ve died and gone before us. Peace to your whole family.
Dear Rucker family,
Some time on July 22 a new angel was greeted by her loving husband Dale who said, “Grab your racket kid, I’ve got Gordon and Arnie lined up for a doubles match with Dallas and JW playing the winners.”
An amazing woman of determination, independence and strength. Jan left her mark on all those who knew her. Blessed be her memory.
I’ll always remember your mom coming to lap swim at the pool and staying to tan. Such a good role model of how to stay physically fit!
I’m thinking of all of you.
I will always remember Jan for her kindness and compassion for patients, having been one of them.
Also remember driving past St Casimir on my to work and seeing her faithful dog waiting outside while Jan attended Mass.

Meg and Family – so sorry about the passing of your Mother. I have enjoyed the pictures and stories you have posted about your visits on Facebook. Skip and I send our love.
Jan was a great help in sussing out Bohan family history. It was good to be with her in Ireland in 1995. She was my oldest paternal first-cousin-once-removed. I knew her grandmother and great-grandma.
I will miss my Aunt Jan! I will be forever grateful for her love and care for her big brother (my Dad) Bob Donahue.
